Say Yes before you are ready

Because what else are we going to do? Say no? Say no to an opportunity that may be slightly out of our comfort zone? Quiet our voice because we are worried it is not perfect? I believe great people do things before they are ready.”― Amy Poehler, Yes Please

People always ask me how I took the initial step to start my business. I am sure there are thousands of people have the same idea as me, but taking the initial step is what sets me apart from them. Although it is scary, if I kept waiting for the right time, it would have never happened. The right time is now, not tomorrow, and not a day in the future when I feel completely ready.

I said “No” to Tango dance classes because I didn’t  think I would do a good job, so I decided not to even give it a try. I said “No” to a dinner date because I was not sure if he was the right person and I didn’t want to waste my time. I said “No” to doing presentations because I didn’t feel that I was fully ready…...

In 2015 I went to Columbia Business School because I wasn’t ready for my business expansion. Little did I know that the following 16 months would be all about doing things I was not ready for.

I went to Women’s Touch Rugby Tournaments despite the fact that I had never played team sports before, and only began to understand the rules while I was already on the bus to the tournament. Many times, I would have to prepare presentations the same day I had to present, and I even decided to go to a different country last minute. There was never enough time to prepare.

There were definitely uncertainties mixed with surprises, and maybe a few disappointing moments of “I wish I did it differently,” but I love it regardless. I am so glad I did all of the things I was not ready for. It changed my entire outlook on life. It is not about getting the best result, but instead it’s about participating in the moment, and enjoying the moment. It is about managing the fear and discomfort and telling yourself it is okay to feel worried or unprepared. I now choose to always try my best and just see how how the outcome unfolds. No matter what the outcome is, there is always a lesson to be learned.

When I hear someone say “I am working on my business plan and waiting for it to become better”.  I will suggest just try it now and see how it goes.  We spend too much time waiting, whether it is for the right timing, the right person in our life or acquiring the right skill for the right job. Why not use the waiting time to do something? I don’t think you will regret it. Don’t be afraid to just try! No matter what happens, you will always learn, grow, and discover something new about yourself.
